Behind the scenes at Brussels Airport with Limburg Startup

On August 28, 2024, Limburg Startup by LRM hosted the third edition of "Let’s Meet," which took participants behind the scenes at Brussels Airport. This exclusive event attracted 35 enthusiastic members from the LSU network to join. The day was filled with inspiration, offering valuable insights into the operations of one of Europe’s busiest airports.

Event highlights

The day began early with a 7:30 AM departure by bus from Corda Campus, setting the tone for an action-packed agenda. Upon arrival at Brussels Airport, participants were greeted warmly and treated to presentations from key figures from Brussels Airport Company’s strategy team. Hubert Flahaux, the Chief Strategy Officer, along with Karen Dams from Strategy and M&A/Corporate Venturing, provided an in-depth look at the airport’s strategic goals and its relationship with startups through Brussels Airport Ventures. Also Jetpack, a tech business in which Brussels Airport Company recently invested in, took to floor to inspire people with the way they handle data and us AI algorithms to optimize certain processes at Brussels Airport.

Following the presentations, attendees embarked on a comprehensive tour that provided an up-close view of the airport’s inner workings. The highlights of the tour included:

  • Baggage system operations: An overview of the sophisticated system that handles millions of pieces of luggage annually.
  • Cargo operations: Insights into the logistics and management of cargo that flows through the airport.
  • Airport Operations Center (APOC): A rare glimpse into the nerve center of the airport, where critical decisions are made in real time to ensure smooth operations.
  • Fire station and maintenance facilities: A tour of the emergency response units and the essential maintenance activities that keep the airport functioning efficiently.

The day concluded with a light lunch, offering participants an opportunity to network and reflect on the morning’s activities before returning to Hasselt.
